Default New to GW and Rangers

I rolled up a ranger for my first toon... I have read other places that R/E is one of the best combos for damage out there.

I find that I tend to roll a high damage class to start and learn the game and then reroll a "tank" type class for my main later on.

Two questions... One is this a good place to start for high damage so I can learn the game with out dieing a ton?

Also what would you suggest for other class options?

It depends what chapter you rolled your ranger on. Generally it doesn;t really matter as you can change your secondary profession later on. In Factions or Nightfall, that change comes early enough but it's much later int he game for Prophesies. While you are not level 20 you will find that there is very little value to be had from any secondary so I would advise taking a secondary that gives you a reusable ressurection skill like Monk, Ritualist or Paragon. Other than that just focus on Ranger skills and abilities. Rangers make pretty poor eles, the only benefit early on is with a conjure skill with the corresponding elemental bow string, but I would take the reusable rez anyday, it will save you a lot of trouble as you develop.

Rangers aren't really "big damage" guys. They can do some decent damage with a lot of preps and such, but really the big damage dealers in GW are warriors, eles, necros, and assassins. Eles are really only big damage dealers in Normal Mode; Hard Mode enemies have very high armor that tends to make elemental damage pretty bad. Also, there isn't really a "tank" profession. Warriors are the closest we have to normal "tanks", but if you play one like a tank you're going to get flak from your teammates for being useless and not killing stuff like you're supposed to. Many classes can "tank" in their own way, and pretty much anyone can become a tank if a protection monk is backing them up.

Did they tell you to put Firestorm or Meteor Shower on your bar too? If so, disregard them completely.

Ranger's a class with plenty of survivability options. If you're looking for big damage, I would recommend Necromacer, Assassin, or Elementalist.

If you want tanking, which isn't a good idea in GW in the first place, you probably want to try rolling a Warrior, Paragon, or Dervish.

Rangers are very fun to play with. You can support your team by spiking a dangerous enemy fast, you can focus on spreading bleeding\poison.. when you get the rank title skills from eye of the north, there are skills there you can spam to help your team.

When you get the skill Marksman's wager combined with antidote signet, you can really start being creative, because you will never run out of energy.

There's a lot of possibilities as a ranger if you only enjoy it ^^

I guess fun while you develop the character, but for normal hard mode play spiking generally means downtime and bleeding/poison is awful by itself. Neither or which are really support.

Rangers are great at spamming things and their multi-hit stuff has synergy with ritualists, necromancers, and Great Dwarf Weapon. If possible, have a caster cast spells on you instead of casting them yourself. Means you'll have more energy and spam to do...more.

rangers are poor damage dealers with bows, glass arrows makes vqing and other pve stuff doable, but it isn't as spectacular as doing damage with a warrior. for damage you could use daggers/scythe because the expertise makes rangers able to use spammable attack skills to no end, or you could use axe/hammer/spear pet builds which are pretty decent as well, for support you'd be better off going r/w and using barrage with save yourselves. rangers are best used in pvp because pvp is less 1 dimensional than pve, and the pressure + disruptive capabilities. generally if your only aim is to do damage, you'd be best going with warrior or assassin.

Ranger was my first character on the day GW Prophecies first went live, now 5 years ago I guess. Ranger is still my primary even though I have one of each, except for Necromancer and Ritualist. Rangers are very versatile and usually need only their own class skills.

Leveling up, Ranger/Monk can be useful for the Monk Resurrection skill.

Various sources tend to concentrate on Ranger at the top of the game in groups. Solo, a pet build or a build including a pet is very good. This is a party game rather than a solo game. In practice your henchmen and heroes are going to be doing most of the damage. The Ranger is best at applying conditions and interrupting.

If you are starting in Prophecies you'll be getting a load of skills from quests, for both your primary (Ranger) as your secondary. Another approach to choosing a secondary is not in aiming for the /Mo hard rez, but for the usefulness of those free skills for your heroes. You'll likely get a few heroes later on and having some skills unlocked for them is going to save you quite a few coins.

Monk heroes can be usefull, especially in PuG's, and Monk support is frequently added to N/ and E/ heroes. If you go H/H on your own a couple of necro heroes will likely be part of your group most of the times, so /N might be an option to consider.

But, this is also an RPG, so you can also choose what you feel fits best with your character.
